"Shake It Up!" I am a casual collector of items usually made from natural materials. I collect gourds in whatever shape or function they present themselves. I collect rattles and cactus items including 'rain sticks.' My collection includes a random assortment of instruments. An idea for a still life sparked with some fabric wild with color and pattern. I set up a still life of instruments played by shaking. I positioned a tambourine for it's compositional shape and function to pose a doll. The busyness of the composition was a bit challenging, no place to rest the eye. The variety of materials added to the complexity. Even so, this painting went smoothly from watercolor sketches to color block-in to finishing details. What began as a whim has become a whimsical series that keeps my imagination engaged.
