The Anza Mural graces the concrete slope beneath the Taylor Railway Yard on the far side of the LA River. Egret Pocket Park, the vantage point, is located in Elysian Valley at the downstream end of the scenic Glendale Narrows where the soft bottom ends and miles of concrete begin. 'The Anza Mural was painted by Frank Romero; it commemorates the 1775-76 Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition. The mural incorporates iconography based on Tongva symbols for mountains, river and dolphins.' (information from "Down By The Los Angeles River" by Joe Linton). The mural is more detailed; this portrayal gives only the general layout and color. This painting clearly shows the shallow concrete apron and the deep river channel and soft bottom flora. I always see birds and waterfowl in this stretch of the river.   August 2015
