"Checking The Harvest" is a 6" x 8" oil study. I have collected a number of Zuni carved corn maidens; I admire them for their craftsmanship and uniqueness, no two alike. The tall corn maiden is carved of antler, the shorter one of shell. With studies I can try out different compositions, color schemes, and 'stories' before committing to large canvas. This is the second of three studies, one of five corn maiden paintings in the "Heritage & Community" Exhibit at La Galeria Gitana. The 'blue moon' is inspired by a necklace made by Santo Domingo artisans of the Reano Family, known for their turquoise mosaic inlay designs on shell. The blue moon, corn maiden carvings, and ears of Indian corn give me elements to rearrange in storied compositions (I provide the elements, the viewer perceives a story). Fall, 2016.
