Don't Fence Me In

Brett Goldstone's Fence is located at Marsh Street Park; it fences off a nearby business property and straddles a small runoff wash. I had noticed the fence on previous visits, but this time I took a closer look to appreciate it's content and sculptural quality. (Brett Goldstone is a Los Angeles-based sculptor originally from New Zealand who has done many artistic gates, fences and bench that are installed along the LA River.) It would be an interesting subject to paint. Considering the composition (a 10 x 20 panel), I figured I had to first paint the landscape, then add the fence, otherwise painting the structure of the dry wash behind fencing would drive me crazy! It was challenging. It's not unusual mid stream to tell myself, 'you might have picked something easier to paint.' But every composition has it's challenges. June 2016
